It is also known as umbrella plant, the Schefflera is a popular houseplant because of the beauty of its variegated leaves, which form “fingers” in a circle. It is a wonderful tropical plant. The leaves are long, shiny, oval variegated that droops gracefully from a central stalk, resembling an umbrella and hence, giving it the name. Used as an attractive indoor bonsai plant.

 Planting And Care of Schefflera Bonsai

Sunlight

• It grows well in bright indirect sunlight, However can thrive well in low light situations.

Soil

• Soil should be well drain and porus.

Watering

• Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
• Water when top soil (1-2 inches) feels dry to touch.
• Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.

Application of fertilizer

• During the main growing season feed the organic fertilizer once a month.
• Loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so it can uptake the nutrients and moisture easily.

Plant Protection

• Remove dead, infected or damaged Bonsai parts and discard them away from the plants.
• For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.

Misting

• The entire tree should be misted every day, while the plant requires a long drink twice a week.
• Schefflera bonsai care also requires fertilizer. Use half-strength liquid plant food and apply every few weeks.

Re-potting

• Repot the bonsai every two to five years depending on its age and size.
• Do the re-potting late evening and keep the plant in shady area for 2 to 3 days and then move the plant in its suitable climatic condition.

Pruning:

• Trim the new shoots leaving one or two pairs of leaves.
• If the canopy becomes very dense the leaves should be thinned out in order to let light get in, prevent the inner twigs from dying and encourage back-budding.

Don’ts

• Do not over water the plant especially when pot does not have drainage holes.
• keep away from the AC Vents.
• Do not apply water on plant leaves.

Initial care for 1-2 weeks after receiving plant at your location.

• Check the moisture in the soil before watering it.
• Poke your finger into the soil, if dry then apply water.
• Keep the plant in indirect light.
• Do not re-pot immediately after receiving it.
