Plant Description: Dutchman’s Pipe Plant

Aristolochia littoralis, commonly called calico flower, is a tropical twining evergreen vine that produces unusual flowers, each of which resembles a dutchman’s pipe suspended on a thin stalk. In one growing season, it will grow to as much 8’ long.  Each flower is shaped like a curved pipe, hence the common name. Flower color is deep purple-brown densely mottled with creamy white. Vines primarily bloom in summer and fall, but in warm climates are free flowering. Flowers are pollinated by flies. Genus name comes from the Greek words aristos meaning best and locheia meaning childbirth or delivery in reference to the fact that plants of some species within this genus have a flower structure which more closely resembles a human fetus in the womb than a pipe, and served in the past as the source of ancient plant preparations used for treatment of pain and infections incident to childbirth.

• It needs light, but the direct light can dry the plant out and scorch the leaves.
• Partial sun to moderate shade works best.

Watering

• Water the plant regularly during the growing season.
• In the winter, water the plant sparingly, no more than once per week.

Soil

• This plant requires very rich fertile soil with excellent drainage.
• Repot younger plants every other year. Mature plants need repotting every three to five years.

Initial care for 1-2 weeks after receiving plant at your location.

• Check the moisture in the soil before watering it.
• Poke your finger into the soil, if dry then apply water.
• Keep the plant in indirect light.
• Do not repot immediately after receiving it.
