Planting And Care

Keep the soil moist by watering regularly during prolonged dry periods; dry soils can cause the plants to ‘bolt’ (going to seed prematurely). Parsley is a hungry plant, so use a general granular plant feed in the soil before sowing or planting out and feed with a liquid plant food throughout summer.

Light Requirement

  • Space parsley plants 6 to 8 inches apart in an area with full sun and nutrient-rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 5.5 to 6.7.
  • Offer partial shade if growing in warm climates.

Soil

  • A pH range of 6.0 to 7.0 is best.
  • Parsley grows best in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Fertilize plants in garden beds once or twice during the growing season, using a 5-10-5 commercial fertilizer at a rate of three ounces per 10 feet of row.

Watering

  • Parsley will need watering about 2-3 times per week.
  • If parsley runs out of water, it will let you know by wilting. However, as soon as you re water, in no time it will be standing back upright again.

Application of Fertilizer

  • Parsley grows best in well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter.
  • Fertilize plants in garden beds once or twice during the growing season, using a 5-10-5 commercial fertilizer at a rate of three ounces per 10 feet of row.

Re-potting

Fill the pot no more than half full of potting soil, slightly bringing it up the sides of the pot. Gently press the soil to help it stay in place, and then lightly, but thoroughly, moisten the soil with water. Before repotting any herb, it’s important to carefully prepare the plant’s root ball.

Parsley Uses

Ornamental Use:

  • Parsley is so attractive that it also integrates easily into ornamental plantings.
  • Its fine-textured foliage is attractive as neat edging or foliage fillers in flower beds, its rich green color setting off the bright blooms of pansies, petunias and other annuals

Medicinal Use:

  • Parsley is an herb.
  • The leaf, seed, and root are used to make medicine.
  • Some people take parsley by mouth for bladder infections (UTIs), kidney stones (nephrolithiasis), gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, constipation, diabetes, cough, asthma, and high blood pressure.

Culinary Use:

  • Because of its light scent and fresh taste, parsley can be used in anything from soups to sauces to vegetables.
  • In Middle Eastern cuisineparsley is one of the main ingredients in dishes such as tabbouleh, a salad using bulgur, mint, parsley, and vegetables, and is the main herb used in stuffing for grape leaves
