Haworthiopsis limifolia

OVERVIEW

Fairy Washboard is a charming succulent species with triangular green leaves arranged in a rosette. The leaves are ridged with white and have pointed tips. Besides this is a relatively widespread species, with several known varieties, including arcana, gigantea, glaucophylla, keithii, striata and ubomboensis. Fairy Washboard is fairly simple to grow in the garden or in containers and is a popular houseplant. This species has been recently reclassified and now belongs to a genus called Haworthiopsis, which was previously included within Haworthia. In addition while you might see it referred to as Haworthia limifolia, the correct name is now Haworthiopsis limifolia.

The plant’s specific epithet limifolia was derived from two combined Latin words, the verb “limes,” meaning “file” or “sharpen,” and the noun folia,” meaning “leaf.” Moreover  it means “file-like leaves,” referencing the plant’s transverse ridges on the leaves.

Size and Growth

Unlike other Haworthia plant varieties, the plant tends to grow quickly but remains small. In additon it rarely grows bigger than four inches in diameter and more than a few inches tall.

It features clumps of up to 20 rosettes of triangular leaves with distinct ridges. These distinct ridges resemble the texture of a washboard, giving it the common name – Fairies Washboard.

USES

Can be grown in gardens or in pots for ornamental purposes. What’s more they make attractive decorative houseplants.
