Red Moon Cactus

Description

This cute “mutant” cactus is actually a combination of two cacti, typically Gymnocalycium (the sicon) and a rootstock cactus, such as Hylocereus. The term “moon cactus” typically refers to the yellow and orange varieties, however red varieties can be included. A number of Gymnocalyciums prefer shade in the wild, being cloaked under shrubs or grasses, while others prefer abundant sunlight. Moon cactus, for one, thrives best in bright, indirect light, and can be grown indoors year round. Those preferring plentiful sunshine may need covering from the sun in the hottest months, but exaggerating this will result in loss of flowers. The balance of the potting medium should be adequate to allow decent drainage so that the plants do not sit in marshy soil for more than a day or two after watering. During the summer months, the plant may need frequent watering, though those in small pots would need weekly watering. Nevertheless, the compost should be virtually dry before re-watering. Watering in the winter months is unnecessary.

Special Features of Red Moon Cactus

  • Colorful Appearance: The red moon cactus stands out due to its vibrant red, yellow or orange color. This hue is not naturally occurring in cacti but is due to a lack of chlorophyll, which is essential for photosynthesis.
  • Grafted Growth: Red moon cacti are typically grafted onto a rootstock cactus (often a Hylocereus species). This grafting is necessary because Gymnocalycium mihanovichii lacks chlorophyll and cannot photosynthesize on its own. The rootstock provides nutrients and water to the moon cactus.
  • Growth Habit: They generally have a globular or spherical growth habit, resembling a small, compact ball.
  • Maintenance: They are relatively easy to care for, requiring bright but indirect sunlight and occasional watering when the soil is dry. However, they are sensitive to overwatering.
  • Flowering: While the primary appeal is their colorful stem, red moon cacti can also produce small, colorful flowers under the right conditions.
  • Decorative Value: Due to their unique appearance and color, red moon cacti are popular as decorative houseplants or in succulent gardens.
