Description

The balsam rose  plant has a soft, fleshy stem; and spirally arranged long pointed leaves. It is an annual plant growing to 20–75 cm tall, with a thick, but soft stem. The leaves are spirally-arranged, 2.5–9 cm long and 1–2.5 cm broad, with a deeply toothed margin. The flowers are pink, red, mauve, purple, lilac, or white, and 2.5–5 cm diameter. They are pollinated by bees and other insects, and also by nectar-feeding birds. The ripe seed capsules undergo explosive dehiscence.

Planting And Care of Balsam Rose

• Watering should be done when Soil feels dry.
• Propagate by seed – it is a prolific self-sower.
• After one season of growth, it generally reappears from self-sown seeds the next year.
• After frost has passed, scatter seeds of balsam rose where desired, or sow seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last spring frost.
• Do not cover the seeds with soil, as they need light to germinate.
• Until the seeds germinate, cover the seed trays with clear plastic to maintain high humidity.
• Water from below to prevent damping off.
• Germination temperature: 65 F to 70 F Days to emergence: 7 to 14.

• Discovered in South East Asia, it is an old-fashioned annual that produces single or double flowers in the leaf axils along the main stem of the plant from summer to early autumn.
