Adromischus maculatus
Description
Calico hearts or Adromischus maculatus are short succulents that are a gray-green to green-brown in color, they may or may not have purple spots on them. The leaves are minuscule clusters that can get up to 3 inches long and up to 1.5 inches wide. Besides the leaves are curved, wedge-shape and almost glisten. The flowers that calico hearts produce are cylinder shape and are a pale, yellowish green color.
Adromischus maculatus, commonly known as the “Calico Hearts” or “Chocolate Soldier,” is a unique and attractive succulent native to South Africa.
Planting and Care of Adromischus maculatus
Soil
- Use a well-draining succulent or cactus potting mix.
- You can create your own by mixing equal parts of potting soil, perlite, and coarse sand.
Light
- Adromischus maculatus prefers bright, indirect light.
- A south-facing window where it can receive a few hours of sunlight daily is ideal.
- Furthermore too much direct sunlight can cause the leaves to burn, so filtered light is best.
Temperature
- These succulents prefer temperatures between 65-75°F (18-24°C) during the day and cooler temperatures at night.
- Protect them from frost and very cold temperatures, as they are not frost-tolerant.
Watering Adromischus maculatus
- Water it sparingly. Allow the soil to dry out almost completely between waterings, especially during the winter dormant period.
- In addition water deeply but infrequently, aiming to moisten the soil throughout the root zone when you do water.
Humidity
- Adromischus generally prefer low humidity environments.
- Also avoid placing them in very humid conditions to prevent fungal issues.
Fertilizer
- Feed sparingly with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half strength during the growing season (spring and summer), approximately once every 4-6 weeks. Avoid fertilizing during the winter dormant period.
Pruning of Adromischus maculatus
- Remove any dead or dried leaves by gently pulling them from the base of the plant.
- This helps maintain the health and appearance of the plant.
Propagation
- It can be propagated from stem or leaf cuttings. Allow cuttings to callous for a few days before planting in well-draining soil.
Pests and Diseases of Adromischus maculatus
- Monitor for common succulent pests such as aphids, mealybugs, or spider mites.
- Moreover treat infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or a diluted rubbing alcohol solution.
