Jackfruit Plant

Description of Jackfruti Plant

  • Size and Growth Habit:

    • Jackfruit trees are large, evergreen trees that can reach heights of 50 to 80 feet (15 to 24 meters) when fully mature.
    • The tree has a dense and spreading canopy with a thick trunk and rough, grayish-brown bark.
  • Leaves:

    • The leaves of the Jackfruit tree are glossy, leathery, and elliptical to oblong in shape.
    • They are dark green on the upper surface and lighter green on the underside, typically measuring 6 to 10 inches (15 to 25 cm) in length.
  • Flowers:

    • Jackfruit trees are monoecious, meaning they have separate male and female flowers on the same tree.
    • The male flowers are small and oblong, clustered in dense inflorescences.
    • The female flowers are larger and develop on short, thick stalks near the trunk and main branches.
  • Fruits:

    • The Jackfruit is the largest tree-borne fruit in the world, often reaching weights of 30 to 50 pounds (14 to 23 kg).
    • The fruit has a spiky, greenish-yellow exterior with a bumpy texture.
    • When mature, the fruit can be cut open to reveal large, yellow-orange pods (or bulbs) surrounded by a sticky, fibrous core.
  • Cultural Significance:

    • Jackfruit is highly valued for its fruit, which is consumed ripe, unripe (as a vegetable), or processed into various culinary dishes and products.
    • The seeds of the Jackfruit are also edible and can be roasted or boiled.
  • Growing Conditions:

    • Jackfruit trees are native to tropical regions and thrive in humid, tropical climates with well-drained soil.
    • They require full sun and are sensitive to frost and cold temperatures.
    • Propagation is typically done via seeds, although grafting is also common to propagate selected varieties.

Medicinal Uses of Jackfruit Plant

The Chinese consider jackfruit pulp and seeds tonic, cooling and nutritious, and to be “useful in overcoming the influence of alcohol on the system.” The seed starch is given to relieve biliousness and the roasted seeds are regarded as aphrodisiac. Moreover the ash of jackfruit leaves, burned with corn and coconut shells, is used alone or mixed with coconut oil to heal ulcers.

Besides the dried latex yields artostenone, convertible to artosterone, a compound with marked androgenic action. Mixed with vinegar, the latex promotes healing of abscesses, snakebite and glandular swellings. The root is a remedy for skin diseases and asthma. In addition an extract of the root is taken in cases of fever and diarrhea. The bark is made into poultices. Heated leaves are placed on wounds.
