This species grows best under bright filtered lighting, as direct sunlight will cause leaf scorch. Plant in well-drained, porous soil, because the rhizome is prone to rotting in waterlogged soil. Allow the soil to dry between watering. Keep the leaves dry to prevent leaf spot.

Light Requirement

• These iron cross begonia plant grow best in bright indirect sunlight coming from a south, east or west window.
• Fluorescent grow lights are also an excellent alternative to natural light for these plants.

Soil

• In the garden, they require free- draining soil improved with compost.
• Heavy clay soil that becomes waterlogged is unsuited, as it can cause root and stem rot.
• In pots, use a light free- draining potting mix containing coco coir, perlite or vermiculite (African violet mix works well)

Watering

• Water only when the soil dries out 20-40%.
• Water only at the roots.

Application of Fertilizer

For potted plants, apply a general-purpose slow-release fertilizer at the time of potting and liquid fertilizer at half-strength every two to three weeks during the growing period. In the garden, it’s advisable to incorporate a general-purpose fertilizer into the soil at planting time.
