Rauvolfia serpentina plant

Description

Rauvolfia serpentina plant also known as Indian snakeroot, devil pepper, and serpentine wood, belongs to the milkweed family, and originates from the Indian subcontinent and East Asia, spanning from India to Indonesia. However in its natural habitat, this perennial shrub thrives throughout India, particularly in the sub-Himalayan regions, and grows at elevations up to 1,000 meters (3,300 feet). Furthermore the leaves of this plant typically grow in whorls of three, with bright green coloring on the upper side and pale green underneath. Besides they have a slender, tapering base, and the plant features long petioles. Also this plant is ideally suited for outdoor cultivation.

Planting of Rauvolfia serpentina Plant

  • Sow seeds on raised beds of 1.5 ft widths, 150-200 mm height and of convenient length.
  • Besides nursery beds are sown in the month of April and are irrigated first before sowing.
  • Moreover germination of seedlings starts within 30-35 days.

 Care

  • Do weeding followed by hoeing to keep the field weed free.
  • In initial (i.e. first year) two weeding are done and in next (i.e. second year) one weeding followed by one hoeing and is done at growing period of plant.
  • In addition if flowering starts in initial period, flowers should be nipped to raise root growth.

 Medicinal Uses of Rauvolfia serpentina plant

  • In earlier times it was used to treat various diseases, including snakebites, hypertension, insomnia, and insanity.
  • It is also employed for epilepsy and dysentery.
  • Reserpine, found in it acts as a depressant on the central nervous system, inducing sedation and lowering blood pressure.
  • In addition root extracts are highly valued for their efficacy in treating intestinal diseases, particularly diarrhea and dysentery, as well as for their anthelmintic properties.
  • When mixed with other plant extracts, it has been used to manage cholera, colic, and fever.
  • Furthermore it is believed that the root of Rauvolfia serpentina plant helps to stimulate uterine contractions and is recommended for use in childbirth to promote the expulsion of the fetus in complex’ juice cases.
  • Besides the juice of the leaves has been used as a remedy for the opacity of the cornea.
  • Also the patients with chronic mental illness treated with reserpine often become relaxed, friendly, and cooperative.
  • Lastly Reserpine is considered valuable in the treatment of chronic schizophrenics.
  • The daily dose of 50 to 100 mg of Rauwolfia produced relief in migraine and headache.
