Compost is used to improve your soil. You can sprinkle about 2 to 3 inches of compost over your flower or vegetable gardens in the spring or fall. Then, grab a shovel or a hand tiller and mix it into the top 6 inches of soil. This helps replenish nutrients plants need after a growing season and makes your soil better at holding onto water while also draining well. If you’re starting a new garden or have areas in your lawn with too much clay or sand, adding compost can really make a difference.

Instead of mixing it into your soil, you can simplify gardening with a no-dig approach. Just spread a thin layer of it on top of your empty planting beds in spring or autumn. Let the rain naturally carry the nutrients down to your plants’ roots. For plants that need more nutrients, like heavy feeders and vegetables, you can apply it as a side dressing during the growing season. Simply sprinkle a few handfuls of aged compost around the base of your plants, being careful not to let it touch the stems. This method is especially effective when applied right before plants start flowering or setting fruit.
