Description: Gateria
Gasteria pillansii is succulent plant native to the arid winter-rainfall regions in the far west of South Africa and Namibia.
It is a nice succulent plant with thick and heavily spotted tongue-like leaves.
It proliferate from subterranean stolons and forms clumps, with up to 150 plants per group and up to 1 m wide.
Variegated Gasteria looks very colourful for succulent collection with its yellow and green foliages.
Moreover it is a easy growing succulent which does not require much care.
A happy gasteria will grow various pups which can be planted individually for propagation.
Planting And Care
Sunlight
- Natural indirect or artificial bright light is ideal for plant growth.
Soil
- Soil should be well draining and porus
- Also avoid clayey heavy soil.
Watering
- Poke your finger or plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
- Apply 1 cup (Approx. 50 ml) water when the top soil (3-4 inch) in pot feels dry to touch.
- Apply water probably in the morning or evening time.
- And do not overwater the plant.
- As a rule of thumb, water the plant thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
Application of Fertilizer
- Before application of fertilizer loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so it can uptake the nutrients and moisture.
- During the main growing season (January-March) feed the plant with organic fertilizer once a month.
- In addition apply water immediately after application of fertilizer.
Plant Protection
- Remove dead and infected or damaged plant parts and discard them away from the plants.
- For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.
Don’ts
- Do not over water the plant especially when pot does not have drainage holes.
- keep away from the AC Vents.
- Do not apply water on plant leaves.

- This plant can be used as contrasting foliage in succulent plantings, cactus gardens or xeriscape plantings
