Description: Purple Sweet Potato Vine

  • Also known as Purple Money Plant
  • It is an ornamental warm-season annual grown for its attractive leaves and vining habit.
  • Well known for its deep Purple foliage and is grown both indoor and out.
  • Grown for its ornamental heart shaped leaves.
  • There are more than a few different ornamental series and cultivars available in a range of foliage colors and leaf shapes, in shades of green and purple as well as a variegated multicolored varieties.

Planting And Care in Sweet Potato Vine

Sunlight

  • It is grown in full sun and also indoors in indirect bright light.

Soil

  • Generally requires moist, well-drained soil rich in organic matter.

Watering

  • Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
  • Water enough to keep the soil consistently moist.
  • Apply water probably in the morning or evening time.
  • Do not over-water the plant.
  • As a rule of thumb, water the plant thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.

Application of fertilizer in sweet potato vine

  • Before application of fertilizer loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so it can uptake the nutrients and moisture.
  • During the main growing season feed the plant with organic fertilizer once a month.
  • Apply water immediately after application of fertilizer.

Plant Protection

  • Remove dead, infected or damaged leaves  and dis card them away from the plants.
  • For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.

Don’ts

  • Do not over water the plant especially when pot does not have drainage holes.
  • keep away from the AC Vents.
  • Do not apply water on plant leaves.

Initial care for 1-2 weeks after receiving plant at your location.

  • Check the moisture in the soil before watering it.
  • Poke your finger into the soil, if dry then apply water.
  • Keep the plant in indirect light.
  • Do not re-pot immediately after receiving it.

Ornamental uses of sweet potato Vine

  • They are eye-catching especially in bright dining rooms and living rooms where their foliage helps energize a room.
  •  Use along the edges of pots, window boxes or hanging baskets to trail over the edge.
