Plant Description: Amra
Spondias mombin, also known as Amra, yellow mombin or hog plum is a species of tree and flowering plant in the family Anacardiaceae. The mature fruit has a leathery skin and a thin layer of pulp. The seed has an oil content of 31.5%. Spondias mombin is a small deciduous tree up to 20 m. The flowers bloom January to May and are sweet-scented, in large, lax terminal panicles of small white flowers. The fruits h ave a sharp, somewhat acid taste and are edible. The fruit pulp is either eaten fresh or made into juice, concentrate, jellies, and sherbets.
Planting and Care of Hog Plant
Sunlight in Amra
Choose a sunny area, preferably with a rich, loamy soil that is moderately acidic.
Soil
- Soil should be well drain and fertile, rich in organic content.
- Dig a pit for tranplanting the plant.
- Gives better yield when planted in field soil.
Watering
- Water the plant when the top soil (1-2 inch) in pot feels dry to touch.
- Do not overwater the plant.
- Water thoroughly in the summer and reduce watering in winter and rainy season.
Application of Fertilizer
- During the main growing season feed the plant with organic fertilizer once a month.
- Loosen the topsoil without disturbing the roots of the plant so it can uptake the nutrients and moisture easily.
Plant Protection
- Remove dead, infected or damaged plant parts and discard them away from the plants.
- For any insect attack or disease, you can use Neem oil, Eucalyptus oil or Citrus oil spray for primary treatment.
Initial care for 1-2 weeks after receiving plant at your location:
- Keep the plant in Natural direct bright Light.
- Poke your finger/plain small stick into the soil to check the moisture.
- Water when top soil (1-2 inches) feels dry to touch.
- Do not re-pot for min. 2 weeks after receiving it.
Uses of Hog plum
- The fruit is used in preparation of chutney, pickle, curries and different types of spicy delicacies.
- This tree has got religious importance as it is worshiped in ‘Nakshathra Vana’ for ‘Hastha’ nakshathra.
- Leaves and barks are aromatic and have astringent value when administered for dysentery.
- Gum from the barks are used in fumigation.
