Moon Cactus

This cute “mutant” cactus is actually a combination of two cacti, typically Gymnocalycium (the sicon) and a rootstock cactus, such as Hylocereus. The term “moon cactus” typically refers to the yellow and orange varieties, however red varieties can be included.

Moon cacti are typically small, spherical plants with vibrant red, orange, pink, or yellow colors. Unlike other cacti, they lack chlorophyll, the pigment responsible for green coloration in plants. Instead, moon cacti display bright hues due to the presence of pigmented cells called betalains. These pigments give the plant its distinctive appearance and make it stand out in any collection of succulents.

Care and Maintenance of Moon Cactus

Sunlight Requirements

Moon cacti thrive in bright, indirect sunlight. While they can tolerate some direct sunlight, prolonged exposure to intense sunlight may cause sunburn or damage to the plant’s delicate tissues.

Watering Needs

When it comes to watering, moderation is key. Moon cacti prefer well-draining soil and should be watered sparingly to avoid root rot. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings, especially during the dormant winter months.

Propagation Methods in Moon Cactus

Propagation of moon cacti is typically done through grafting. This involves attaching a young moon cactus, known as a scion, onto the stem of a rootstock cactus.
